Shakespeare in Theatre

The English Department has been busy arranging activities to support their Year 11 students with their Shakespeare studies. The events outlined below have been carefully planned to take place in March, to provide a perfect springboard into Literature revision season.

Those students studying Macbeth have the opportunity to attend the National Theatre’s production on Wednesday 7th March with Ms Bailey, Mrs Sadd and Miss Bevan. This event is now sold out at the box office: hardly surprising since the lead roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are being played by Rory Kinnear and Anne Marie Duff. There is no doubt that the lucky students, who are able to go, are in for a real treat. Because of the high demand for tickets at the theatre, the English Department were only able to secure 30 places. Should you wish your child to see Macbeth performed by a professional company, please respond to the ParentMail letter that will be sent out shortly before Christmas, and submit payment promptly, via ParentPay, to secure a place.

On Monday 12th March, those students studying Romeo and Juliet will be attending a practical workshop on the play delivered by The Young Shakespeare Company. The company will perform two or three key scenes and talk about the play from a performance perspective. This event is intended to support the classroom teaching of the play as a piece of drama and help the students understand the context of the play. A letter has already been sent out on ParentMail, and because there are no traveling costs involved, the department have been able to keep costs to a minimum. In this case we are asking parents and carers to make a voluntary contribution. Please check ParentPay, as payments need to be submitted by Friday 15th December.

As all the exams are ‘closed book’, literature students need to memorise all the key aspects of all the texts. To help them with this the staff of the English Department continually search for creative opportunities to enhance and inform their students’  learning, and they thank you for your continued support of their endeavours.
