A-level Literature

Love through the Ages- A studious day out!

“I’d like to think that my poetry does not exclude men, I am writing about humans and human nature, which surely applies to both sexes” Dame Carol Ann Duffy.

On Monday the 13th of November, the A-level English Literature students had the fortunate opportunity to hear, first-hand, from some of the authors and examiners on the English Literature specification on a study day in London. The day was jam packed with five hours of lectures from academics from across the UK, sharing what their interpretation of ‘Love through the Ages’ was and how the students could best achieve top marks in their exams. Although mentally exhausting, the day was incredibly rewarding with students being able to listen to and ask their own questions to true experts on the subject, which has helped generate insightful conversations back in school.

The highlight for most of the students was the opportunity to hear the Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy (who is a class favourite) explain some of her inner thoughts on her collection Feminine Gospels, a text they will be examined on. Having gained this rare opportunity to hear the poet’s personal opinions, the students felt enthused heading back into school and continuing their studies with this new insight.

Overall, the English Department are exceptionally glad the students have had this experience and come back with such a positive outlook on the study of English Literature.
