Art Visit Borough Market

On Friday 22nd of September, the Art Department took their newly signed up group of Year 10 GCSE students to The Tate Modern gallery and Borough Market in London.

This is a well established trip, that all the students thoroughly enjoy because it gives them access to artworks of the highest distinction and importance at the gallery, broadening the students’ cultural understanding which is so important at GCSE.

After the gallery we took a short walk along the South bank past the Millennium Bridge with views of St Paul’s cathedral, Shakespeare’s  Globe Theatre and The Golden Hind galleon; the vessel used by Sir Francis Drake.

Arriving at the market the students were immediately immersed in the sensory delights of a vibrant and bustling London market. Borough Market is an ideal place to observe and record the different cultural food and drink on sale there, which are then used to develop ideas back in the classroom. The market, close to London Bridge, was buzzing with vitality the day the school visited. As the students soaked up the atmosphere, they were challenged to find and photograph examples of vibrant and exciting wares to support a chosen theme. They we reminded to pay close attention to colour, texture and subject matter. The follow up work, in the classroom, will become the foundation of the Year 10 coursework.
