GMS Sports Day

Wednesday 12th July was the celebration of student sport at GMS in the annual Sports Day.

Preceding the day, four one hour morning sessions for each respective year group battled for their houses in running, jumping, throwing and tug of war. This was followed by an afternoon session where the entire school and staff came out for the sprint events.

As usual the level of performance from the students was outstanding. 15 school records were broken: most memorable was Codi McCarthy’s performance that broke the Year 8 triple jump record, which had stood for 21 year. Molly Jones, GSM’s elite athlete, from Year 10 broke two records in the 300m and the 800m. The quality of the results reflects the hard work by staff and students over the past five years when athletics has been a focus point in both curriculum and extra-curricular time. All the students were a credit to their forms and their houses showing true grit and determination as they competed for the available points, whilst being cheered and clapped by the rest of the school.

Not to be outshone by the students the staff performed too. The PE relay team of Miss Porter, Mr Goodright, Miss Boddy (new recruit) and ex-sixth former Harry Dore took on the best of the current sixth form in the 4 x 100 metres. Much pre-race bravado from the sixth form was soon silenced as the PE team destroyed the sixth formers by a 30 metre margin. Talk of a re-race was soon delivered by the sixth form boys, who were clearly shocked at the electric pace of the adults.

In the 4 x 100m staff race there was excitement too, poor Miss Tuddenham was taken out by the legendary cover supervisor Mr Kilmurray, who failed to slow down at the end of his run. However, the ever glamorous Miss Tuddenham was unperturbed as she raised herself from the floor knowing her hair and outfit still looked perfect. This race was won by Miss King (science), Miss Reilly (art), Mr Beveridge (music) and Mr Higgins (PE).

Thanks must be extended to the house leaders who rallied their students to compete, the maths team for timing, Mr Hollyman, Miss Todd and Miss Jones for certificate writing, Miss Murray (D of E) for scoring Mrs Rooney for the outstanding photographs, Miss Walker for first aid, Mr Ross for announcing, Mr Shea (jnr and snr) for race organisation and the entire PE team for all of their hard work on the day, setting up, running the event and packing away. A superb event enjoyed by all, roll on GMS Sports Day 2018!
