Portrait Award Art Trip

As always an incredibly busy term in the Art Department!

This term we have overseen the GCSE and A-Level exams, internally assessed every piece of coursework and exam project, been moderated by AQA, taken fifty Year 10 students to The National Portrait Gallery and hosted a spectacular Fashion Headdress show.

The outcomes from our students in Art and Design progresses to new heights with every academic year, so I would like to congratulate the students for all their hard work and creativity, with every success inspiring another.

On Thursday 6th July Miss Reilly and I took fifty of our Year 10 artists to visit the BP Portrait Award, we make this trip every July to mark the beginning of the Portraits Coursework Project. Usually, we tie in a visit to the National Gallery. This year we decided to focus our attention on the quality rather than the quantity. So, instead we booked a lecture talk about the origins and background of some of the paintings exhibited in this year’s portrait award. A lecturer from the Slade School of Art gave a very insightful and interactive talk about the exhibition right back to when the exhibition began in 1987.

The students had a wonderful experience looking and sketching the various artworks in both the BP Portrait Award and in the permanent exhibitions. Lunch in the sun in Trafalgar Square added tothe whole experience.

The students will use their research to help them give context to their own portraits in the coming months.
